2.3.9.2.1 Shinto

Japan's two major religions are Shinto and Buddhism. Buddhism originated in India and is believed to have been introduced to Japan in 538 CE. Shinto (神道; literally "Way of the Gods") is Japan's indigenous religion. It involves belief in sacred texts such as the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki, reverence for the Japanese Imperial House—particularly the Emperor, who is described in these texts as a descendant of deities and a legitimate successor—and participation in Shinto rituals, including prayer at Shinto shrines.
